Oakley, a subsidiary of Luxottica, sought to develop a Lens Guide portion of their site to help customers compare all of Oakley’s available sunglass lenses while filtering by a variety of sport, technology, and color.

Business Case

Oakley aimed to develop the guide not only for an online consumer experience but also to create a unique omnichannel sunglass shopping experience. Both in-store and online consumers would be able to go through a consultative funnel to find the perfect lens for them.

Blockers

After an initial technical review we found significant constraints due to an old technology stack - their internal database performance was resulting in extremely slow load times on the Oakley site and was causing significant inefficiencies for the Oakley workforce. After testing each page and page subsets, we recognized that the existing server configuration required significant database admin work to optimize performance.

Solution

  • Sidebench highlighted Oakley’s database problem areas and identified a custom plugin solution to relieve these issues. This ultimately resulted in reduced load times by 81%.
  • The guide showcase’s Oakley’s innovative lens technology, PRIZMTM, which fine-tunes vision for specific environments by emphasizing colors where the eye is most sensitive to detail, in order to enhance performance and safety.
  • A visualizer was built to allow customers to digitally see the difference in vision between the naked eye and the Oakley lens.
